United Way of DeKalb County Celebrates 65 Years of Local Impact

Community invited to honor 65 years of change through special $65 anniversary giving opportunity

DeKalb County, IN — United Way of DeKalb County is celebrating a remarkable milestone — 65 years of uniting people and resources to create lasting local change.

On October 5, 1960, a small group of community visionaries came together to form what was then known as the “DeKalb United Fund for You.” Their very first campaign raised $49,195 and supported nine local agencies, planting the seeds for what would grow into a powerful movement built on collaboration and compassion. One of the founding leaders, Ms. Barbara S. Oren, embodied the spirit of giving and determination that continues to guide United Way’s work 65 years later.

“Those early leaders recognized that when we come together — when we unite around shared purpose — we can tackle our community’s biggest challenges,” said Tyler Cleverly, Executive Director of United Way of DeKalb County. “That same belief in collaboration, compassion, and community impact still drives everything we do today.”

Today, United Way of DeKalb County continues to strengthen the community by investing in programs and partnerships that improve health, expand opportunities for youth, promote financial security, and foster a resilient, connected DeKalb County. Through initiatives such as ALICE and Community Impact Grants, Kindergarten Readiness, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and the Early Learning Coalition, United Way works alongside local partners to build a stronger future for all. The organization also cultivates community connection through events like Day of Caring, Power of the Purse, and its Annual Campaign — each one uniting volunteers, donors, and local businesses in the spirit of service.

In honor of this milestone, United Way of DeKalb County invites the community to celebrate by making a special $65 birthday gift — a tribute to 65 years of impact, collaboration, and compassion. Every dollar given stays local, helping United Way continue funding programs that uplift families, empower youth, and strengthen the community we all call home.

Gifts can be made online at www.unitedwaydekalb.org/donate-now, or mailed or dropped off at United Way of DeKalb County, 950 W. 15th Street, Auburn, IN 46706, or PO Box 307, Auburn, IN 46706. Please include “65th Birthday Gift” in the memo line.

“For 65 years, United Way of DeKalb County has been a trusted partner in building a better community,” Cleverly added. “This anniversary isn’t just about looking back — it’s about celebrating what’s ahead. Together, we’ll continue to create a DeKalb County where every individual and family can thrive. United is the Way.”

Here’s to 65 years of community, compassion, and connection — and to the bright future ahead.
