UNITED WAY OF DEKALB COUNTY EXPANDS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY CANCER
DeKalb County, IN – Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana is pleased to announce the agency has received a $10,000 ALICE Grant from United Way of DeKalb County to provide vital mental health support for DeKalb County residents impacted by cancer.
This funding supports Cancer Services’ Mental Health and Emotional Support Program, ensuring individuals and families have access to mental health screenings, counseling, and emotional support from highly trained professionals who understand the unique challenges of the cancer experience.
“At United Way of DeKalb County, we know that many hardworking families — often referred to as ALICE households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) — struggle to afford essential services, including mental health care,” said Tyler Cleverly, Executive Director of United Way of DeKalb County. “A cancer diagnosis can place an even greater financial and emotional strain on families. This investment helps ensure DeKalb County residents have access to the support they need during one of life’s most difficult seasons.”
United Way of DeKalb County’s ALICE Grant Program focuses on supporting individuals and families who are working but still struggle to afford basic needs such as healthcare, housing, childcare, and mental health services.
Research from the National Cancer Institute shows that approximately 25% of cancer survivors experience depression, 45% experience anxiety, and many also face symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These mental health challenges can significantly impact quality of life and recovery outcomes.
Through this program, Cancer Services provides counseling, emotional support, and access to resources that help individuals and families manage stress, develop healthy coping strategies, and improve overall well-being during and after cancer treatment.
This investment reflects United Way of DeKalb County’s commitment to building a Healthy Community by ensuring residents have access to essential services that support both physical and mental well-being.
Together, United Way of DeKalb County and Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana are helping ensure that DeKalb County residents impacted by cancer have access to the care, resources, and support they need to move forward with strength and hope.
